The Kuldīga half marathon has been held every August since 2006; in 2025 it celebrated its 20th edition with more than 2,000 runners from Latvia and abroad. The course winds through the narrow streets of the old town, mostly on cobblestones, with plenty of turns and often in summer heat — which is why it's known as a tough one, and Jeļena Prokopčuka's women's record has stood since the very first race. This is where Latvian mass running first got electronic timing, cheer squads and music along the route, and today it's a real family festival with concerts and even a toddlers' crawling race. Kuldīga is a UNESCO-listed gem of Courland: Europe's widest waterfall, Ventas Rumba, an old brick arch bridge and wooden houses along the Alekšupīte stream.
