Kuopio Maraton takes place in late August and in 2027 will be held for the 30th time. The programme is broad: marathon, half, 10 km and 5 km, a 4 × 10 km relay, an untimed ENJOY walk-run and children's races. Start and finish are at the Matkus shopping centre, and the course passes lakes, riverside paths and green neighbourhoods, with the 5 km loop circling Lake Matkusjärvi. Organisers stress it's an experience, not just a race. Kuopio is the capital of Lakeland: the Puijo lookout tower, the market square with kalakukko fish pie and Lake Kallavesi.
