The Kustmarathon Zeeland takes place in early October and bills itself as the most beautiful and toughest marathon in the country. Start and finish are in seaside Zoutelande; the course passes Domburg and Westkapelle, the Veerse Gat dam and a spectacular 9 km stretch over the Oosterschelde storm-surge barrier, part of the Delta Works, ending with a 30-metre climb. Beaches, dunes and wind make the average finish around 4:48. The weekend draws some 13,000 participants from 12 countries. Zeeland is a land of beaches, mussels and small towns like Middelburg and Veere.
