The Lausanne Marathon takes place on the last Sunday of October and is considered one of Europe's most scenic marathons. The course follows the shore of Lake Geneva from Lausanne through Pully, Lutry and Cully, past the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces, to Rivaz, St-Saphorin and Vevey, then returns; the profile is mostly flat with gentle waves along the shore, and the French Alps glow across the water the whole way. Besides the marathon there are a half marathon, a 10 km and Nordic walking, and the autumn colours of the vineyards and the grape harvest give the race a special mood. Lausanne offers the Olympic Museum, the Ouchy waterfront and its Gothic cathedral, and Lavaux offers Chasselas tastings in cellars overlooking the lake.
