The Wiener Silvesterlauf, organised by LCC-Wien, is Vienna's New Year's Eve tradition; the 2026 edition is the 50th, and in 2024 a record 4,500 runners took part. The course is one clockwise lap of the Ringstrasse, about 5.35 km, past the State Opera, the museums, the Hofburg, Parliament, the Burgtheater and the University. It is flat and fast, but plenty of people run for fun in costume — from Teletubbies to lucky pigs — and the best outfit is crowned on the finish stage. There are walking and Nordic walking categories and even a heavyweight class, and every finisher gets a medal. Later the city celebrates on the Silvesterpfad in the centre, and New Year's Day brings the famous concert, Viennese coffee and strudel.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
