Started by Jane Tomlinson in 2003, the Leeds Half Marathon takes place in May and has become one of Yorkshire's biggest running events. It starts and finishes at Headingley Stadium; the route passes the University of Leeds, heads north through Meanwood past Golden Acre Park and returns along Leeds Road to the stadium, with some honest climbs and descents. The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon starts earlier the same day, and the race raises thousands of pounds for charity every year. Leeds offers Victorian arcades and Kirkgate Market, the Royal Armouries, the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey and the Yorkshire Dales nearby.
