The Leiden Marathon has taken place in May for more than 35 years. Saturday brings a 5 km night run; Sunday the marathon, half, 10 km and a free kids' race. The course runs along the historic centre and canals, then through polders and green villages, starting on the Koninginnelaan and finishing on the Vismarkt in the very centre. Leiden is the oldest university town in the Netherlands: the Lakenhal museum, the Hortus botanical garden, De Valk windmill and canals where locals sit in boats on summer evenings.
