The Abbott Longford Marathon takes place on the last Sunday of August — 2026 was its 26th running — with a half marathon, a marathon and a 63 km ultra. The course is flat and fast: after a lap of Longford town, runners head out on the Strokestown Road and turn onto quiet country lanes past farms and houses before returning via Battery Road. The half starts outside the Longford Arms Hotel, the town turns out to cheer, and the race has long been the county's biggest sporting day. Longford is Midlands lake country: the Shannon and Lough Ree, the Corlea Trackway with its Iron Age road, and friendly pubs.
