The adidas Manchester Marathon is held in April and has become the UK's second-largest marathon, with more than 40,000 participants and, unlike London, no ballot. The course is known as one of the flattest in the country, heading out from the Old Trafford area through Greater Manchester's suburbs, where huge crowds line the roads. It is a favourite for first marathons and qualifying-time attempts: fast, friendly and loud. Manchester offers United and City, the Northern Quarter, the Science and Industry Museum, the National Football Museum and a legendary music scene.
