The Epiphany Marathon in Kolárovo (Gúta in Hungarian) is a winter running tradition of southern Slovakia, organised by the town itself in early January. Marathoners run from Gúta through Vágfűzes, Kava and Agyagos and back, while half marathoners go out to Vágfűzes and return; the course is flat tarmac, its highest point a bridge over the Váh. The feel is intimate: registration in a school canteen, a six-hour marathon cut-off and hot tea, fruit and pancakes waiting at the finish. Kolárovo lies where the Váh meets the Little Danube on Žitný ostrov, a land of plains, rivers and thermal baths, with a famous wooden floating water mill nearby.
