The Maratonina del Mare — the Mezza Maratona di Pescara — takes place in May on the Abruzzo coast. Alongside the half marathon there are 10 km, 6.5 km and 2.5 km races, so seasoned runners and families with children can all take part. As the name suggests, it is a 'little marathon by the sea': Pescara is a flat seaside city, and the spring breeze off the Adriatic helps you hold your pace. The atmosphere is a spring celebration on the eve of beach season. Pescara is the birthplace of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, a city of long beaches and the Ponte del Mare footbridge, and within an hour lie the Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains and the trabocchi fishing platforms of the coast.
