Maratonul Nisipului — the Sand Marathon — has been run since the mid-2010s right on the beach at Mamaia near Constanța, and in 2026 it returned in mid-May under the 'Next Wave' banner. Distances include a marathon (also as a relay), half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and a 1 km family run, so there is a challenge for ultra lovers and kids alike. Running on soft sand along the Black Sea shoreline is a different workout from tarmac — every minute is earned — but you are surrounded by waves, gulls and sea breeze. From its early editions the race had a charity side, for instance raising funds for the neonatal unit of Constanța's hospital. Constanța is ancient Tomis, with Roman mosaics and the Art Nouveau Casino on the seafront, while Mamaia means beaches, seafood restaurants and sunsets over Lake Siutghiol.
