The Matterhorn Ultraks is a summer trail festival in Zermatt whose places sell out completely. The headline Sky race is 49 km with about 3,600 m of climbing and the Extreme is 26 km with over 3,000 m on technical trails, plus the 32 km Mountain (also as a relay), the 19 km Active, the 4.9 km Vertinight night vertical and a kids' race. The courses pass the Gornergrat, the Schwarzsee and glacial moraines, with the Matterhorn in view almost all the time, making it one of the most spectacular mountain events in the Alps. Zermatt is a car-free village at the foot of the Matterhorn, with the Gornergrat cog railway, the lift to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the Five Lakes trail and old wooden granaries in the village.
