Kilkenny's Medieval Marathon takes place in September with a marathon, 30K, half marathon and 10K; in 2025 more than a thousand runners took to the city's streets. The longer races start at the Tholsel on High Street, pass the best-known sights of medieval Kilkenny, head out onto country roads and return to finish in front of the Butler Gallery. It's a race steeped in history, with narrow lanes, stone walls and cathedral spires all around. Kilkenny means Kilkenny Castle, St Canice's Cathedral and its round tower, the Medieval Mile, the Smithwick's brewery and craft workshops.
