Maratona da Europa is a late-April running weekend in Aveiro, listed by World Athletics among the world's 100 best road races. In 2026 more than 20,000 entrants from 82 countries signed up for the marathon, half marathon and 10 km — a record for the event. The race puts inclusion first, with inclusive medals designed with children with cerebral palsy and the 'Solidarity Wheels' charity project. Aveiro is called Portugal's Venice: canals with painted moliceiro boats, art-nouveau houses, the striped beach huts of Costa Nova and sweet ovos moles.
