Meia Maratona de Berço is the half marathon of Guimarães, the city known as the cradle of Portugal; in 2026 it is held on 5 October, the national Republic Day holiday. Besides the half you can run 10 km or 5 km. The course winds past the castle, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and Largo da Oliveira through the UNESCO-listed historic centre, over cobbles and through lively squares. Guimarães offers medieval streets, a cable car up Penha mountain with views over the Minho and hearty northern cooking with vinho verde.
