The Leiria Half Marathon is organised by Leiria city council in mid-October. Choose from three distances — half marathon, 10 km and 5 km — each run as a single loop through the city. The route follows Leiria's streets beneath the medieval castle that towers over the centre and along the Lis river. Leiria is a handy base for exploring: the UNESCO-listed monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça, Fátima, the Pinhal de Leiria pine forest and the Atlantic beaches near Nazaré.
