The Torres Vedras Half Marathon takes place in winter, in January, with a half marathon, a 10 km race and a 5 km walk. The half is point-to-point: a 10 am start on Praia Formosa in the seaside resort of Santa Cruz on the Atlantic coast and a finish at the Expo Torres exhibition centre in town, while the 10K and 5K start and finish at Expo Torres. The course heads inland from the ocean through the rolling Oeste countryside of vineyards and wind turbines. Torres Vedras is famous for one of Portugal's liveliest carnivals and the Napoleonic-era defensive Lines of Torres Vedras, while Santa Cruz's beaches are loved by surfers.
