The Manuela Machado Half Marathon takes place at the end of January in Viana do Castelo and is named after the city's own Manuela Machado, world and European marathon champion. It is an early-season winter race, popular for testing form ahead of spring marathons. The course runs through the seaside city at the mouth of the Lima River, with views of the river, the Atlantic and Santa Luzia hill. Viana do Castelo is known for the hilltop Santa Luzia basilica with one of Portugal's finest panoramas, the Eiffel bridge over the Lima, gold filigree and the colourful folk costumes of Minho.
