Melilla is a Spanish autonomous city on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, a unique place where Europe and Africa meet within a single city, known for its early-20th-century modernist architecture and the fortified old town of Melilla la Vieja. The 14th Media Maratón 'Melilla, Ciudad del Deporte' also offers 10K, 5K, and mini-race distances. Melilla remains within the Schengen area, though it forms a separate customs zone outside the EU VAT area, and special border controls apply at the crossing with Morocco, including document checks on entry and exit. Most visitors from mainland Spain arrive by flight from Málaga (about 45 minutes) or by ferry from Málaga or Almería.
