The Marathon of Messini takes place in early April in the town of Messini in the southern Peloponnese, organised by the municipality and the Region of Peloponnese. The course is a single flat, AIMS-certified loop across the Messinian plain, through olive groves and out towards the sea — a great choice for a fast time. Besides the marathon there are 10 km and 3 km races, and finishers receive a medal, T-shirt and post-race meal. It is an intimate race with a field in the hundreds and a warm small-town feel. Nearby are the ruins of Ancient Messene, one of Greece's most impressive ancient cities, and Kalamata with its olives and the beaches of the Messinian Gulf.
