The Half Marathon del Piceno Fermano takes place in September in Porto San Giorgio, a seaside town on the Marche coast. Besides the half there are 10 km and 5 km races, so athletes line up alongside holidaymakers still enjoying the last days of beach season. The course runs along the flat Adriatic shoreline, with the hills and historic town of Fermo rising behind. It is a warm, resort-style race, and the sea is right there when you finish. Porto San Giorgio is known for its marina, a 13th-century fortress and seafood restaurants, and just a few kilometres away Fermo offers its Roman cisterns and Piazza del Popolo.
