Midnattsloppet is one of Sweden's best-loved races: since 1982, in mid-August as dusk falls, tens of thousands of runners have taken over the streets of Stockholm. The signature distance is 10 km around the island of Södermalm, with a 5 km and a half marathon too, plus the short Mini and Lilla races for children. The course takes in Söder's hills along lively streets and waterfronts with views of the water and city lights, lined with bands and crowds, so it feels like a night-time carnival. It is organised by the Hammarby IF sports club, and from here the 'Midnight Run' spread to Malmö, Gothenburg and Helsinki. Södermalm is Stockholm's bohemian district of vintage shops, cafés and the Monteliusvägen viewpoint over Gamla Stan and City Hall.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
