Mljet Trail

Mljet Trail takes place in early May on Mljet, one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic. Start and finish are in Pomena, with 42 km (the first trail marathon in the national park), 23.4 km, 13 km and 6 km, plus a kids' race. The marathon follows the sea to Polače past the ruins of a Roman palace before heading into the forest; the 23 km circles both lakes, the salt pans and coves with a panoramic ridge, and the 13 km includes a short, steep climb to Montokuc. Pine forests, turquoise water and hardly any cars make it feel like an escape from civilisation. On Mljet, take the boat to the monastery on St Mary's islet in the middle of the Great Lake, swim at Soline and try the local fish and goat's cheese.
