Morat-Fribourg has been held in early October since 1933 and is inspired by the legend of a messenger who ran from Murten to Fribourg in 1476 with news of the victory over Charles the Bold. It starts beneath the walls of medieval Murten, and the 17.17 km course crosses hilly countryside with real climbs before the finish in Fribourg, a serious test at any level. Besides the main race there is the 9.65 km Courtepin–Fribourg, walking, a trail, and kids' and family runs, and the race itself is a national tradition passed down through generations of runners. Murten is one of Switzerland's prettiest towns, with ramparts above its lake, and Fribourg is a bilingual city with a Gothic cathedral, bridges over the Sarine and a funicular powered by waste water.
