The Neujahrsmarathon Zürich is billed as the world's first marathon of the year: the gun goes at exactly midnight between 31 December and 1 January in Schlieren near Zurich, and in 2026 it was held for the 21st time. About 1,100 runners from 50 countries welcome the New Year on a flat, fast, floodlit night course, choosing between the marathon, half marathon and quarter marathon, and a kids' run takes place at 10 pm on 31 December. The cold can be serious, minus eight degrees in 2026, but that does not stop course records falling, and the festive mood, fireworks and hot drinks make it an unforgettable night. After the race, sleep in and head into Zurich for its old town, the Limmat waterfront, the lake and museums.
