Nordmarka Skogsmaraton is a June forest race starting at Lake Sognsvann on Oslo's northern edge; in 2027 it will be run for the 34th time. There is a half marathon, a marathon and an ultra, and many runners return year after year, with anniversary gifts for those who complete five editions or more. It is more gravel race than trail run: almost the entire course follows forest gravel roads between Nordmarka's lakes, with only about 1.5 km of the marathon on singletrack, though the hilly profile makes it no easy outing. Spruce forests, dark woodland lakes and silence half an hour from the city centre explain why the organisers call it 'this year's most beautiful race'. Nordmarka is Oslo's favourite playground, with swimming at Sognsvann, hikes to forest cabins, the Holmenkollen ski jump nearby and the Opera House in the centre.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
