The New York City Marathon is the only Major that crosses all five boroughs: a pre-dawn ferry to Staten Island, a climb onto the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in the silence of mile one, then two million spectators lining the route from Brooklyn to Fifth Avenue and the Central Park finish. The course is officially labeled "hilly" because of its five bridges, but those bridges are exactly what make the race what it is: Tamirat Tola ran it in 2:04:58 in 2023, and Hellen Obiri rewrote the women's record in 2025 wearing experimental On shoes not yet available at retail. The New Balance finisher jacket has become its own collector's item, resold on eBay years after the race.

Reviews

Aravind (geeksonfeet.com)2023

The moment I received the beautifully crafted dual-toned gold and silver medal, a sense of satisfaction washed over me — after all that is what marathon is all about; GPS dropped out entirely on the lower deck of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

Mathieu Lavedrine (Medium, Runner's Life)2024

New York was not a disappointment — a sunny, cool day at the edition that broke the all-time finisher record: 55,529 people, more than any marathon has ever seen.
