OCC opens the big races of UTMB Mont-Blanc week in late August and is the UTMB World Series 50K final, with entry via Running Stones or elite qualification. It starts in the morning in Orsières, runs through the Val d'Entremont, crosses the Col de Balme on the Franco-Swiss border and tops out on the Tête de Balme at 2,321 m. It then drops into France via Vallorcine, climbs the Col des Posettes and follows northern balcony trails beneath hanging glaciers to a finish in central Chamonix — 60 km and 3,500 m of climbing with a 14.5-hour cut-off. Chamonix buzzes that week with the expo and fans from around the world, plus the Aiguille du Midi cable car and walks to the Mer de Glace.
