The Olympia Marathon takes place in late November in Ancient Olympia, where the first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC. The marathon and half marathon run on Sunday, with a 10 km health and power-walking event the day before and races for children and juniors. Start and finish are in the centre of Olympia, and the course follows the rolling country roads of Elis through olive groves and green valleys. Running a marathon where the very idea of athletic competition was born is a feeling no city race can match. After the finish, explore the ancient stadium, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Archaeological Museum with Praxiteles' Hermes, and the local wines of Ilia.
