Olympus Marathon

The Olympus Marathon is one of Greece's oldest mountain races, with results going back to 2004, and it is held in early summer. The course follows the sacred path ancient Greeks climbed to honour Zeus: it starts at the archaeological site of Dion almost at sea level and climbs via the Koromilia and Petrostrouga refuges to the Plateau of the Muses and a high point of around 2,780 m beneath the 'Throne of Zeus'. Then comes a long descent to Prionia, down the Enipeas gorge and to the finish in Litochoro's municipal park. It is tough but stunning — from Mediterranean pines to bare alpine rock in a single day — and around it there is a 71 km ultra, a vertical race, shorter distances and kids' races. Litochoro is a mountain town at the foot of Olympus with sea views, the gateway to the Mytikas trails, with Pieria's beaches and ancient Dion nearby.
