The XM Limassol Marathon is the largest running event in Cyprus, AIMS-accredited and held over a full weekend in early April. The programme includes a marathon, half marathon, 10 km Energy Race, 5 km City Race, corporate 5 km and a 1 km kids' race. The course is flat and fast: start and finish in the city centre, then out along the Mediterranean seafront to the ruins of the ancient royal city of Amathus and back, with the sea in view almost all the way. It is a true festival attracting runners from around the world, and on race day the promenade becomes one long grandstand. Limassol offers the Molos promenade, a medieval castle, an old town full of tavernas, a modern marina and Commandaria vineyards up in the Troodos hills.
