Paavo Nurmi Marathon is held in Turku in the second half of August, reaching its 36th edition in 2027. Friday features the 5 km, 10 km and a kids' minimarathon; Saturday the half and full marathon. The 2025 edition sold out, with thousands of runners. The race honours the ‘Flying Finn’ Paavo Nurmi, a Turku native and nine-time Olympic champion, and is organised by the Turku sports federation. Summer evenings, the Aura riverside and runners of every level make it a real festival. Turku is Finland's oldest city: a medieval castle, the cathedral, boat cafés on the Aura river and the Archipelago Sea.
