The 'Pralenk žirgą' ('Outrun the Horse') half marathon takes place in Palanga in late April on Jurginės, St George's Day — in Lithuanian tradition the patron of horses and spring fields, hence the playful name. It's a traditional spring race where some chase a PB while others run with friends and family to open the season by the sea. The scenic course runs through seaside Palanga, from the Žemaičių Alka sanctuary to Birutė Park, along pine-lined avenues and past the dunes. Palanga is Lithuania's top summer resort: a long wooden pier with Baltic sunsets, Birutė Park with the Tyszkiewicz Palace and Amber Museum, and Birutė Hill with its legend of the pagan priestess.
