Paloheinä Marathon is a unique club marathon in north Helsinki: first run on 16 December 2006, it has been held year-round on weekends and public holidays ever since — the 789th edition came in October 2026. The certified out-and-back lap is about 5.27 km: the marathon is 8 laps, the half 4 and the quarter 2. The surface is mostly firm gravel and sand, with about 1.7 km of forest, a flat first 2 km and a short steep hill near the end, all away from main roads. There are no medals and no time limit, but annual diplomas, an aid station and a warm community that runs in any weather. Start and finish are at the Paloheinä outdoor hut, next to Central Park and its ski trails, half an hour by bus from downtown Helsinki.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
