The Panemunė Half Marathon takes place in Kaunas in June, hosted by an unusual organiser — the Lithuanian Army Uniform Museum: start and finish are in the museum courtyard, and proceeds help support it. Distances are 550 m for kids, 6, 12 and 21 km; every finisher gets a commemorative medal and the podium finishers receive trophies. The course runs through Panemunė pine forest on the bank of the Nemunas, on soft paths with shade even on a summer day, suitable for beginners and seasoned runners alike. Kaunas was Lithuania's interwar capital, with UNESCO-listed modernist architecture, Laisvės Alėja, a castle at the river confluence and cosy cafés by the Nemunas.
