Pirkan Hölkkä is one of Finland's oldest mass runs, with roots going back to 1970, held on the first Sunday of October. The main distance is 33 km from Valkeakoski to Tampere, while the shorter 14 km Pirkan Kieppi starts at Nirva; you can race against the clock or walk untimed. The route is mostly off-road — running tracks, forest roads and paths, with only about 5 km of asphalt and six aid stations — through Pirkanmaa's forests in autumn colours. Typically 1,000–1,500 people take part, and it's organised by local outdoor clubs. Tampere sits between two lakes: the Pyynikki observation tower, the Moomin Museum, old mills by the Tammerkoski rapids and public saunas.
