Plitvice Marathon is one of Croatia's oldest marathons: 2026 saw its 41st edition, with more than 900 runners from a record 50 countries. It takes place in early summer in Plitvice Lakes National Park, with a marathon, half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and kids' races. The course runs through forests, meadows and past the lakes — the organisers call it one of the most beautiful racing settings in Europe — and Kenyan athletes regularly feature among the winners. It is a weekend festival in the heart of nature. Plitvice is 16 cascading lakes linked by waterfalls and wooden boardwalks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Lika's cuisine means lamb, trout and local cheeses.
