The Raxlauf is an intimate mountain race organised by WSV Payerbach at the end of summer; its 15th edition in September 2026 had around 140 starters. The classic course climbs 1,100 m in 8.8 km from the Raxseilbahn valley station via Knappenhof and Törl to the top station. The 10.1 km plateau loop runs across the top via the Ottohaus and Jakobskogel to the Preinerwand cross and back along the lake path, and the extreme 15.5 km route with 1,400 m combines the two. The Reichenau mountain rescue and the cable car company support the race, and at the top lies a wide limestone plateau with views of the Schneeberg. The Rax is the Viennese favourite mountain, with the old spa villas of Reichenau, gorges and the UNESCO-listed Semmering Railway next door.
