The GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf is Europe's biggest cross-country run: every May thousands take to the ancient Rennsteig trail along the ridge of the Thuringian Forest. The headline distance is a 72.7 km supermarathon from Eisenach to Schmiedefeld, with a marathon and a half too, and aid stations serve the famous oat gruel. Eisenach has Wartburg Castle (UNESCO), where Luther translated the Bible, and the Bach House museum.
