Rīga–Valmiera is a 107 km run-walk whose roots go back to 1989, when Latvia was on the road to independence; the distance echoes the anniversaries of the state's founding. The start is at midnight sharp at Riga's Freedom Monument, and runners push through the night and the dawn north-east along the A3, with a 19-hour cutoff. The route is unmarked — you follow a description and GPX track through nine checkpoints — and your finish at St Simon's Church in Valmiera only counts once you touch the door handle; the last 7 km are a separate timed speed section. The race holds an IAU Silver Label, doubles as the Latvian 100 km championship, and charity donations go to help children with disabilities. Valmiera is a gateway to Gauja National Park: sandstone cliffs, canoeing on the river and the castles of Cēsis and Sigulda nearby.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
