The Vilnius Marathon in its current form has been held every September since 2004 and is Lithuania's biggest running festival: in some years more than 16,000 people have taken part, and the 2026 edition broke records for both speed and participation. The programme includes a marathon, half marathon, 10 and 5 km, walks and a 200 m kids' run. Start and finish are by Cathedral Square, and the course passes through the baroque Old Town, Vingis Park, along the Neris embankments and through the Valakampiai pine forest. Spectators, music and cheer squads line the streets, and running over the cobbles of the old centre is especially emotional. Vilnius means the bell tower and Gediminas Tower, the Gate of Dawn, bohemian Užupis and Lithuanian food from cepelinai to bread kvass.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
