Risnjak Trail takes place in late July in Risnjak National Park in Gorski Kotar, based in the village of Crni Lug. The three distances are named after forest animals: Medo (bear) 11 km (+455 m), Vuk (wolf) 23.5 km (+1,196 m) and the most popular, Rys (lynx) 32.7 km (+1,698 m), plus kids' races. The courses are technical and demanding — karst rock, steep climbs and wide views — and on a clear day you can see the Adriatic from the summits. In midsummer it is cool here and smells of pine, and the race is part of the same series as the Plitvice Marathon. Gorski Kotar is a land of dense forests, rivers and lakes, with game dishes and blueberry pies, around half an hour from Rijeka and 1.5 hours from Zagreb.
