'Izskrien Rīgu' ('Run Riga') is a city running series, held since 2013, designed to get residents of all ages moving. In summer the stages are held on Thursday evenings: a joint 19:30 start for 1, 5 and 10 km plus a 30-minute 'health run', with children's races an hour earlier. The Biķernieki stage takes place at Riga's famous motor-racing complex, among the pine forests on the east side of the city — smooth surfaces and cool evening air make it pleasant and quick. The vibe is friendly and family-oriented, and many runners do the whole series to collect points for the overall standings. Riga means a UNESCO-listed Old Town, Europe's largest collection of Art Nouveau on Alberta and Elizabetes streets, a Central Market housed in former Zeppelin hangars, and the Jūrmala seaside just half an hour away.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
