RunThrough Trails Ascona-Locarno takes place at the turn of October and November, when Ticino is still mild and the woods are in autumn colours. The 42 km marathon, with about 2,500 m of climbing, rises to the 1,600 m summit of Pizzo Leone with views of Lake Maggiore and Monte Rosa, while the 24 km course, with about 1,270 m, mixes forest paths and ridges. On Friday evening there is a vertical stair race up to the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary above Locarno, plus a kids' race, and finishers receive wooden medals. Locarno and Ascona are Mediterranean Switzerland, with palm-lined promenades, the Piazza Grande, the Brissago Islands and walks in the Maggia and Verzasca valleys.
