Runway Run is a one-of-a-kind race on the runway of the Lithuanian Air Force base in Šiauliai, timed to mark the anniversary of Lithuania joining NATO (29 March 2004). There's a single 3 km distance that you can run or walk, and on race day the runway is painted in the national colours. Lithuanian Air Force aircraft and fighter jets from the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission stand alongside; before and after the start there's a military exhibition where you can meet pilots, and a concert closes the day. Soldiers, allies, schoolchildren, students and families run together, and every finisher gets a souvenir. Šiauliai is Lithuania's fourth city and the gateway to the famous Hill of Crosses with its hundreds of thousands of crosses, while the town itself has a bicycle museum and the Rūta chocolate factory.
