Salomon Ultra-Trail Hungary takes place in May with its race village in Szentendre, half an hour north of Budapest, and draws around 1,500 runners — the organisers call it the country's most popular trail race. There are six distances, 111, 84, 54, 42, 30 and 22 km, plus a kids' trail. The courses plunge into the dark, dense forests of the Pilis and Visegrád hills, follow creeks and climb again and again, opening up views over the Danube Bend. Szentendre is an artists' town of baroque lanes, galleries and a marzipan museum, with Visegrád Castle and Esztergom Basilica close by.
