The Lidl S. Silvestre Cidade do Porto is northern Portugal's big pre-New Year race: in 2026 it is held on Sunday 20 December with a 6 pm start. Last time almost 10,000 people lined up; choose the 10 km race or a 5 km walk. It starts on the grand Avenida dos Aliados, and the route winds through illuminated cobbled streets with many turns that demand repeated accelerations — fast but never dull. Christmas-time Porto means the Ribeira and Dom Luís I bridge in lights, the Sé cathedral, port in the Gaia lodges and a hot francesinha after the finish.
