The Schafberglauf is a classic Salzkammergut hill race held since 1983; the 27th edition is set for 8 May 2027 with a 3 p.m. start. It is organised by the Laufgemeinschaft St. Wolfgang, one of Austria's largest running clubs, and in 2026 it hosted the Austrian mountain running championships; places are limited to 300. From the SchafbergBahn cog railway station the course climbs 1,221 m in 7.6 km on forest trails and footpaths with gradients of up to 26%, crossing the tracks twice — the train has right of way. The top offers one of Austria's great views, with the Wolfgangsee, Mondsee and Attersee spread below. St. Wolfgang has its pilgrimage church with the Pacher altar, the White Horse Inn of operetta fame and boat trips on the lake.
