The Sea Ice Marathon takes place in late February in Luleå in northern Sweden, right on the ice of the frozen Gulf of Bothnia. Runners choose 5 km, 10 km, a half or a full marathon, each a single loop on an ice course among the snow-covered islands of the archipelago. Underfoot is packed snow and ice, around you a vast white sea, low winter sun and silence; the organisers honestly warn that 'it's likely to be cold'. It is an adventure race that makes an ordinary marathon feel like a stroll. Luleå is the gateway to Swedish Lapland, with the UNESCO-listed church town of Gammelstad, ice roads and skating tracks on the sea, saunas and, on clear nights, the northern lights.
